12 June - Spring Series 2010.- Final
by Richard van den Heuvel

The final day of the Spring Series provided just enough wind for the catamarans to sail the 2 scheduled races. No Lasers took place, because only 2 Laser sailors turned up. A sad conclusion for that class. The final results for the series are as follows:

5 & 6 June - Spring Series 2010.- Part 5
by Richard van den Heuvel

On Saturday the wind kept us waiting till 3 PM before a start could be made. But the 2 scheduled races were sailed without further problems. On Sunday the normal wind pattern was back and 2 races were sailed. This weekend the starts were from a committee boat and shared with the First Matchracing Competition at Varuna. Both events were a success. The results for 18 races in the Spring Series are as follow

29 May - Firebird-Prince Bira Trophy 2010.
by Richard van den Heuvel

The wind was good (13 knots on shore) when the 2 Hobie 16's, 3 Hobie Tigers and 1 Nacra F18 took to the water and assembled near the start line at 11 AM. They had to battle a strong incoming tide all the way up to Koh Rin. The close reach to Koh Rang Kwiam was reasonable, but then all the way back to Koh Krok, the F18 boats with their spinnakers had easy going. It is always tricky to round the island with Southerly wind, but when you don't squeeze, it is no problem. After 3 hours the first boat crossed the finish line, followed by the other F18's. One Hobie 16 did not see it after struggling around Koh Rin and came back. The other Hobie 16 slugged it out and passed the finish line after 5 hours Even with their handicap they would have to have sailed more than one hour less to beat the F18. The results are as follows:

22 & 23 May - Spring Series 2010 - Part 4
by Richard van den Heuvel

This weekend both days the wind was rather quiet at first, but later improved to make it moderate sailing. A good chance for the less experienced sailors, but probably too tame for the diehards. On Saturday the start had to be delayed by one hour, but once going, the sailing was good. Sunday we started on time with some 6 knots at the flagpole, but the windspeed did not improve very much the following hours. Anyhow, a total of 4 races were sailed in the series. Results after 14 races are:

15 & 16 May - Laser Weekend 2010.
by Chris Dando

Conditions were ideal to get as many sailors of all standards on the water for the Laser weekend. Both days were light to medium winds although there was a squall at the start of Sunday’s race which did lead to a couple of capsizes! 6 round the buoys races were held with some variations in sailing instructions to close the fleet up. This seemed to work with 5 different winners and some very close racing all the way to the finish line. Overall the weekend was sailed in great spirit and enjoyed by all. The results of the competition are as follows:

8 to 10 May - Varuna International Hobie Championships 2010.
by Richard van den Heuvel

This first edition of the Varuna International Hobie Championships, as follow-up to the Top of the Gulf Regatta, went very well, with excellent wind on Saturday and Sunday and sufficient sailing conditions on Monday. Due to the Hobie 16 Worlds, scheduled for August in China, only a small group of sailors from overseas were present. Varuna Hobie 16 sailors were absent and about half the Varuna Hobie Tiger sailors joined for Saturday and Sunday, as Monday was no holiday. Courses and start line were set perfectly according to our visitors, so praise for our Race Officer Khun Sukit. On Monday a protest was submitted, but dismissed by the Protest Committee. The results are as follows:

No Sailno Name Scores 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

24/25 April - Spring Series 2010 - Part 3.
by Richard van den Heuvel

On Saturday the wind was not very cooperative and came from the North, usually not a good sign in this time of the year. After a delayed start, most boats managed to reach the finish line, but a follow-up race was cancelled. Sunday was better and after a moderate start the wind became better. As a result, it was decided to do 3 races, to make up for Saturday. The results after 10 races are now:

Club Races 18 April 2010
by Richard van den Heuvel

The weather gods decided on Saturday 17 April to disrupt the planned Thailand Open Multihull/Monohull Championships by unleashing most severe thunderstorms, both in the morning and afternoon, so it was decided to postpone the competition to some dates later in the year. Instead, Club Races were held on Sunday under normal conditions. Some 7 lasers and 6 Catamarans took to the water and sailed 2 races back-to-back. The results were:

13/14 March - 10/11 April - Spring Series 2010 - Parts 1 & 2
by Richard van den Heuvel

The first weekend of the Spring Series saw very few boats on Saturday, but on Sunday the cats were well presented. The Lasers let it pass. The wind was good and both days the scheduled 2 races were sailed. The second weekend there were not enough sailors on Saturday, but on Sunday 2 cats and 3 Lasers sailed the 2 races. The results of 6 races are as follows.

27 & 28 March - Hyland Challenge Trophy 2010
by Richard van den Heuvel

The wind changed to the North this weekend and luckily was still sufficient for some good racing around the buoys on Saturday and long distance on Sunday. Only the cats showed up, the laser sailors seemed still tired from the Masters competition. For the races around the cans only 5 cats started, but for the long distance race around Koh Krok, westmark, Koh Sak, Koh Larn and a buoy near Pattaya Park some 12 catamarans lined up. No mishaps occurred and after 2 hours around the islands the first Hobie Tiger went across the finish line, followed shortly by the others. The results were:

20 & 21 March - F18 & Open Catamaran Championships 2010
by Richard van den Heuvel

The first F18 & Open Catamaran Championships at Varuna were sailed under perfect wind conditions and to the opinion of the sailors very succesfull. On Saturday three races around the cans were completed, on Sunday one race around the buoys and one long distance race. The latter sent the F18 class to Ocean Marina, the Open class went around Koh Krok. On Saturday three cats were unlucky in the first race and had to retire with gear failure, but Andy's boat was fixed quickly and ready to continue with the second race. Patrice had more serious problems and had to wait till Sunday for competing again. The third boat was not seen on the water anymore. The results were as follows:

Winter Series 2009 / 2010
by Richard van den Heuvel

Over a period of 3 months (December to February) a total of 18 races were sailed in the Winter Series. Some weekends we had strong winds, favoured by the cats but not by the Lasers, other times the wind was rather weak and not so much pleasure to sail a race. Normally this time of the year the wind comes from the North and is steady, not this year. She changed to the South in mid-January and regained some good strength early in February. The number of sailors each time also varied very much. The cats went from 2 to 13 boats, the Lasers from 4 to 8. During 4 races only the Lasers sailed. In total 23 Catamarans participated, but never more than 13 at a time, usualy less. There were 17 participants in the Laser class, but never more than 8 at a time. As can be expected in Series racing, those who come often, make the best scores. With 2 races discarded, the outcome is as follows:

20 & 21 February 2010- Laser Nationals Thailand
by Richard van den Heuvel

Good wind (may be a bit strong for some sailors), excellent race management (under difficult physical circumstances) by our Race Officers Khun Sukit and Khun Visanu ensured a smooth running of the championships. Both days 4 races were scheduled and completed, a tribute also to the sailors, who spent about 4 hours on the water. There were no protests, so everyone must have sailed according to the rules. Congratulations to all, sailors and race management, for the enjoyable event. The results are as follows:

  Race 1 Race 2 Race 3 Race 4 Race 5 Race 6 Race 7 Race 8
Boat Sail N umber Skipper Place Pnts Place Pnts Place Pnts Place Pnts Place Pnts Place Pnts Place Pnts Place Pnts Total Total 2 disc. Place 2 Disc.
